Many 21st century teachers have made a shift from hardbound traditional textbooks to updated, interactive, and free Flexbooks. They have found that teaching from customizable textbooks incorporated with multimedia content is in many ways better than teaching from boring traditional books. CK-12 Flexbooks not only engage students in the learning process and enhance their overall learning experience but also provide quality educational material for K-12 students. Try these: http://goo.gl/ka5OD

[...] Opinions on Open › Beyond the Textbook: The Illusion of Quality in K-12 Education — This is a strong counter to those claiming that the traditional publisher textbooks are authoritative and of much higher quality. “Evidence strongly suggests that the average textbook, as currently constructed, is not a high quality resource. Several studies, beginning in the 1980’s, have elaborated on this evidence, concluding that the textbook is a hopelessly low quality educational resource. Low quality because of the way textbooks are written and processed; hopelessly low quality because the existing process of textbook creation is enforced by state policies.
All authors write their books on computers in these days.
Therefore it is very easy to transform that manuscript to an ebook.
One ebook software can be use by billion times. Then almost anybody can host an ebook.

This is what what I had been claiming for the last 10 years.
Books are expensive because of publishers. Numbers are just above. Plus we kill all the forests.
Poor intellectual property rights defenders? Where are you ? Only 10 % goes to professors or authors.
We are willing to pay $ 10 to the professors for an ebook instead of a $ 100 for that publishers' book.
Publishers will be extinct as well do not worry. Look up Kodak films. Digital photo came. Film industry became extinct. So will publishers. I suggest now sell ebooks at $ 11 ; $ 10 for the writers $ 1 is the profit for distributors.

[...] Can Creative Commons effect social change in education? The open education community today is only a small subsection of those involved in education worldwide, but some great initiatives and projects have already come out of it. An initiative like Peer 2 Peer University is a prime example of the social change that can happen in education when you start building on the concepts of open. P2PU is teaching and learning by peers for peers, and it is organized learning that is taking place outside of any institution. It’s what can happen when the default changes, when open educational resources scale. CC helps make that scale possible, which is what will ultimately transform the social landscape of education.
This is one of the most spot on brilliant articles on what is wrong with textbooks as we know them. I am fascinated by the concept of designing one's own learning materials using naturally occuring pathways. Real learning is an organic process much like the growth of healthy plant root systems. Roots follow organic pathways to the raw materials they need each day. The brain will do the same if it is given the chance to actually follow a natural pathway.
