Many 21st century teachers have made a shift from hardbound traditional textbooks to updated, interactive, and free Flexbooks. They have found that teaching from customizable textbooks incorporated with multimedia content is in many ways better than teaching from boring traditional books. CK-12 Flexbooks not only engage students in the learning process and enhance their overall learning experience but also provide quality educational material for K-12 students. Try these: http://goo.gl/ka5OD

[...] Opinions on Open › Beyond the Textbook: The Illusion of Quality in K-12 Education — This is a strong counter to those claiming that the traditional publisher textbooks are authoritative and of much higher quality. “Evidence strongly suggests that the average textbook, as currently constructed, is not a high quality resource. Several studies, beginning in the 1980’s, have elaborated on this evidence, concluding that the textbook is a hopelessly low quality educational resource. Low quality because of the way textbooks are written and processed; hopelessly low quality because the existing process of textbook creation is enforced by state policies. This process is known as the state textbook adoption process.” [...]

This is one of the most spot on brilliant articles on what is wrong with textbooks as we know them. I am fascinated by the concept of designing one's own learning materials using naturally occuring pathways. Real learning is an organic process much like the growth of healthy plant root systems. Roots follow organic pathways to the raw materials they need each day. The brain will do the same if it is given the chance to actually follow a natural pathway.

"Chop shops" is a great term, as if textbooks were like hamburger meat. We don't really know much about how their made, or what goes in them, but we probably should care.
